Students, families and school staff at 146 schools in California recently participated in the Fire Up Your Feet Fall Activity Challenge, competing to win awards to support school physical activity and wellness programs.
It all started when Malabon Elementary School parent Norene Walters’ bike was stolen from the school last September. Norene, used to staying active by biking in every morning with her three children, could have used the incident as an excuse to stop riding. Instead, she used it as motivation to get more kids and families on bikes.

Aleksander Academy is a small school located in Alpharetta, Georgia, that serves students with autism, ADHD and other learning disabilities. As a school that specializes in students with learning differences and special needs, Aleksander Academy is well aware of the benefit that their students receive from physical activity. However, the school’s location in an office park presents challenges when it comes to giving students access to outdoor spaces to play and be active.

Research shows that daily physical activity enhances brain performance and improves learning, yet only 4 percent of elementary schools and 8 percent of middle schools provide daily physical activity for students.
This year marks the 17th U.S. Walk to School Day. 17 years! Wow. It occurs to me that some of the kids who took part in that first Walk to School Day event in Chicago in 1997 are now in their late-20s. They may be moms and dads themselves, maybe even planning a Walk to School Day event for their own young children on October 9th. Wow again.
